Barbaros Hammer retrospektyva „Kreivėse“ – žvilgtelėjimas į eksperimentinio queer kino legendos kūrybą, asmenybės raidą ir lesbietiškos patirties reprezentaciją ekrane.

„Kol iki galo savęs nesupranta, lesbietės menininkės nekuria. Aš siekiau, kad mano, lesbietės menininkės, augimo trajektorija taptų suprantama istorija. Laikui bėgant mano filmai tęsė ir papildė vieni kitus, o aš atskleidžiau savo lesbietės savastį vis atviriau ir visapusiškiau.“ (Barbara Hammer, 1981 m.)

Savo pirmajame ilgametražiame filme Barbara Hammer jungia vaizdus iš dabartinių gėjų ir lesbiečių porų gyvenimo su atrasta, uždrausta ir nematoma istorine medžiaga, ieškodama prarastų queer istorijos liekanų išblukusiose emulsijose ir sudūlėjusiose juostose. Skaitydama paraštėse, tarp eilučių, anapus nubrėžtų vizualinio teksto ribų, Hammer kelia istorinės reprezentacijos klausimus. Šioje daugialypėje, užburiančioje dokumentikoje ištraukos iš 1933-ųjų metų filmo „Sklypas Sodomoje“, laikomo pirmuoju JAV sukurtu queer filmu, bei ketvirtojo dešimtmečio Vokietijos dokumentinio ir vaidybinio kino archyvinė medžiaga pinama su šiuolaikine.

Tai antroji dokumentika Barbaros Hammer autobiografinių filmų trilogijoje (kiti filmai – „Nitratiniai bučiniai“ ir „Istorijos pamokos“), kur iš senų namudinių filmų, nuotraukų, pokalbių, garsų ir citatų Hammer kuria koliažą, kuriame pasakoja apie savo vaikystę imigrantų iš Ukrainos šeimoje – mamą, kuri norėjo, kad Barbara būtų kaip mažoji aktorė Shirley Temple, ir senelę, dirbusią nebyliojo kino žvaigždės Lillian Gish virėja. Hammer fiksuoja savo pačios gyvenimą septintajame dešimtmetyje ir tą momentą, kai 1970 metais pirmą kartą išgirdo žodį „lesbietė“ bei suprato, kad jis apie ją.

Barbara Hammer’s film retrospective at “Kreivės” is a glimpse at work of a queer cinema poineer, and an opportunity to reflect on a lesbian experience representation on screen.

The progression in my films over the years has been one of the addition, of more fully and wholly bringing into the light the total lesbian self.” (Barbara Hammer, 1981)

In her first feature, after decades as a pioneer of lesbian cinema, Barbara Hammer weaves striking images of four contemporary gay and lesbian couples with footage of an unearthed, forbidden, and invisible history, searching eroded emulsions and images for lost vestiges of queer culture. Questions of historic representation are examined through addressing the margins, between-the-line readings, and images outside of prescribed textual boundaries. Archival footage from “Lot In Sodom” (1933), often regarded as the first queer film made in the United States, as well as footage from German narrative and documentary films of the thirties, are interwoven with contemporary footage in this multi-faceted, haunting documentary.

Hammer’s 1996 documentary is the second in a trilogy of autobiographical films (other two are “Nitrate Kisses” and “History Lessons”); where from a collage of old home movies, photographs, interviews, sounds and quotations, the documentary film details artist’s childhood as a young girl born into an Ukrainian family, with a mother who wanted her to be like the child actress Shirley Temple, and a grandmother who worked as a cook for the actress Lillian Gish. It chronicles her life in the 1960s and the moment in 1970 when she first heard the word lesbian and realised that it applied to her.
